Throughout Iqaluit there are several stairs to climb outdoors. Due to permafrost, building are built on pilons, which means you must climb in order to reach the entrance of the majority of buildings. Now, steps are not just stones, or concrete. I suppose in the middle of winter, neither would be very safe. Instead, there are various forms metalic grates as steps and stoops around town. I finally took my camera out and took photos of some examples...not that it's too exciting, but you can see how someone must be very skilled to walk in high/pointy heels around here. There's also the dust, sand, gravel aspect that would also make it difficult to walk in that type of footware...

Walking on the grates in shoes/boots with tiny heels takes a bit of practice, but isn't that hard. Just put all your weight on the toes so the heel just touches the metal and you are good to go!
